When the spine is abnormally curved, which most often begins at mid or late childhood, the condition is called scoliosis. The person with scoliosis may appear to slump or lean to one side. In young people, scoliosis is not painful, sometimes the first indication that a young person has a curvature is a problem in fitting clothes or adjusting the length of a skirt or slacks.
Concerned parents can observe their children at home. Knowing what to look for is important in determining if a child has symptoms of the disease. Ask the child to stand straight: Are the ribs even on both sides? Are the hips level? Are the shoulders level? Is one shoulder blade more prominent than the other? Is the waistline level or is one pant leg longer than the other?
These are simple observations which could save your child or yourself a lot of trouble later. Consult your chiropractor if you suspect a problem. If you are 1 to 100, it is still a good idea to have your chiropractor examine your spine regularly for the detection and correction of spinal subluxations which could eventually cause problems later. An ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure. Take care of your body and it will take care of you.
